The United States of America will on Friday announce amendments to it’s sanctions programme on Zimbabwe, a notice from the US Treasury late Thursday said.
The notice from the Treasury titled, “Publication of Amended Zimbabwe Sanctions Regulations” said: “The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is amending the Zimbabwe Sanctions Regulations, 31 C.F.R. part 541.
“This regulatory amendment is currently available for public inspection with the Federal Register and will take effect upon publication in the Federal Register on May 22, 2020.”
OFAC enforces sanctions that include asset freeze, blocking of transactions and blocking of.lines of credit.
It was not immediately clear what the changes would entail. However, Western embassies, including the US are currently riled over alleged human rights violations in Zimbabwe, with the recent alleged abduction of three female opposition politicians appearing increasingly to be the smoking gun.
It has previously been suggested that more names of individuals propping President Mnangagwa, including businesspeople, could be added to the blacklists. – R&M
